At Marc Jacobs, there were stripes of every, well, stripe. Horizontal, vertical, curved, colorful, black and white. You name it. He pulled from a 60s oeuvre—a mix of the iconic fashion movie Qui ĂȘtes vous, Polly Maggoo? and Pierrot the pantomime. It was graphic. Highly graphic.

Save for a few teeny-tiny-short tunics with scalloped hems, everything was long, stretched out further by the lines. Day and evening mixed together, and nearly everything was accented with a midi-heel or a pointy-toed flat.

Tradition Fashion Interplay : An Imperative for Identity & Continuity


Fashion in India, in its look and feel continues to be a part of the cultural fabric of India today away from the uniformly prescribed fashion code of global fashion. The parallel market of "indigenous clothing has retained itself and co-exists on its own terms with the contemporary" (Dhondy, 2010). The contemporary too draws confidently from this rich heritage effortlessly combining 'new' with 'old' retaining its core identity. There has of late been a shift to a more inclusive partnership between design and artisan community and clearer focus towards pushing the boundaries in fashion by exploring form, surface and material going beyond pure aesthetics.

Free from the burden of fashion history, new age designers in India are building successful partnerships with artisans where the artisans become true beneficiaries in the business. Meaning and value in the creation is drawn from the collective strength of skill, technique, and resources along with experiences.

This paper attempts to highlight how fashion as a practice can provide a context for crafts to benefit through integration into the 'process of commerce and business, offering a way forward in socially responsible sustainable design environment' (Clark, 2007). Having trained as a fashion designer and subsequently as an educationalist in India, the author is inevitably given to identifying patterns and mapping similarities across disciplines to make meaning out of its evolving material and fashion culture.

Is Green the new Black?


Textile industries are a strand of the global web. What they do to the web is what they do to themselves. Textile industry is the most ecologically harmful industry in the globe. Hazardous practices followed during the production process such as bleaching, dyeing, etc releases toxins that swell into our ecosystem. When a part of the eco system is contaminated, its impact is felt by all. Hence being sustainable is essential for the health of our environment, and also for the well being of our future generations.

The concept of sustainability is going through a magical transformation. Shedding its initial impression of coarse fabric, boring colors, and unappealing look, it is now taking pride by being the preferred choice of ramp walk models, and fashion designers. Global trends are driven by customer's preferences towards an ethical lifestyle. A report on Ethical Consumerism by the Co-operative Bank states that sales of ethical clothing during the period 2007-2009 rose to 275 million USD, a period when recession was at its peak.

Corporate social responsibility has become a critical consideration for the apparel industry. Corporate responsibility is not an add-on from outside, but should be built with the company itself. Many leading companies in US, and EU have adopted policies, and programs with an intention to initiate their corporate social responsibility, by adopting sustainable manufacturing processes.
